Technical University of Liberec

The Technical University of Liberec (TUL) is the first step in the course of the Neisse University. Recently it celebrated its fifteenth birthday. It is one of the best technical universities as well as the member of the top 10 universities in the Czech Republic. Apart from studying at Neisse University the school also offers master and doctor degree programs. This article is aimed to provide a short description of TUL including useful information for students. At the end of it you’ll find the websites of current Neisse University lecturers.

HISTORY

The Technical University of Liberec since 1989 reprofiled from the ordinary university with technical specialization and two faculties into the university recognized and respectable in land and abroad with six faculties and technical specialization integrated with humanistic education. Technical University of Liberec is the continuation of the first College, which was established in Liberec in 1953 – The University of Mechanics. From the beginning, the College offered academic programs in areas of Mechanical Technology, the Design and Construction of Textiles, Glass and Ceramics Machinery etc.

Individuality of the university‘s connection with traditional textile industry resulted in its division into two faculties in 1960: the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Textile Engineering. The primary name of the school, The university of Mechanics was substituted by The University of Mechanics and Textile. Between 1990 and 1995, another four faculties were founded and accredited: the Faculty of Education (in 1990), the Faculty of Economics (1992), the Faculty of Architecture (1994) and the Faculty of Mechatronics and Interdisciplinary Engineering Studies (1995). Those foundations together with offered study programs of Bachelor, Master and Doctor degree, study research activities and international cooperation contributed to the fact that on 1st January 1995, the College gained the status of a university and became the Technical University of Liberec. Today, the University has an enrollment of more than 5,000 full-time students in six faculties. A wide range of academic programs is offered at all levels, leading to the following degrees:

  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Science
  • Master of Arts
  • Master of Science
  • Doctor of Philosophy

Establishment of new faculties allowed the university to cope with wider city area requirements for education of primary school teachers, economy experts, managers. By its business activities and foundation of Faculty of Architecture, the university referred to the rich architectural tradition of Liberec. Faculty of Mechatronics and Interdisciplinary Studies reflects connection of electronics, cybernetics and mechanics with inclusion of modern findings of physics, chemistry and biology. Thanks to city support there could arise new buildings, what allowed the university to widen their laboratory areas and especially to make the modern information centre on the place of old university‘s library.

ACADEMIC YEAR

The Academic year comprises of two terms (semesters) - the winter (October - February) and the summer term (March - June). Each includes approximately 14 weeks of courses and 5 weeks of examination periods. Exact dates of the beginnings and ends of semesters may slightly differ. Vacations are from the beginning of July till the end of September.

DEGREES AVAILABLE AT TUL

The University offers courses leading to the three degrees, which are described below. The Neisse University program is included in the set of Bachelor courses and is the subject to the same rules and applications as the other Bachelor courses offered by TUL.

Bachelor

Bachelor courses offered by the university lead to the degree of Bc. equivalent to B. Sc. or B.A. (in Czech called “bakalár”). The studies are more practical in comparison with other courses provided by the University. The Final State Examination, part of which is the bachelor thesis defense, is the last step towards obtaining a Bachelor title. Standard length of regular daily studies is three or four years.

Master

Another type of courses offered by the University is courses, that lead to the degree of Master equivalent to M.Sc. or M.A. (in Czech Mgr. -“magistr” or “inženýr”). The master degree programs are divided into standard and continuing studies. In first case students enter Master programs from the very beginning. In the second case they enter Master programs after completion of some Bachelor degree programs. This allows students to make career decisions while still studying. They can either graduate as Bachelors or continue in order to obtain a Master degree. Master studies are more theoretical than Bachelor studies and after five or six years of regular daily studies they are finished by the Final State Examination and the diploma thesis defense.

Doctor

The university also enables obtaining the third and the highest level of degree. The Postgraduate Doctoral courses lead to the degree of Ph.D. (in Czech “doktor”). These are completed by the State Doctoral Examination and doctoral thesis defense. Standard length of doctoral studies is three years.

ASSESSMENT SYSTEMS

Assessment of studies is divided into mid-term and end-of-term including other tests, credits,
classified credits and oral examinations during semesters. At present, two systems are used for assessment of students.

First of them was developed by the Commission of the EU in order to provide common procedures to guarantee academic recognition of students abroad. It is called The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). According to it, the students must acquire a certain number of credits every academic year. The workload of an academic year of study in the ECTS is represented by 60 credits.

The second system is a common scale of grades from 1 to 4, where

1 - excellent = “výborne”
2 - very good = “velmi dobre”
3 - good = “dobre”
4 - failed/unsatisfactory = “neprospel”

T-UNI ONLINE – UNIVERSITY LIFE IN INTERNET

The Liberec Technical University internet reporting team, T-UNI Online was established on 8th of November 2001 as an alternative for T-UNI paper version. Founders are Jan Sura (an Economics Faculty graduate of 2002) and  Zdenek Motl (a Mechanics Faculty graduate)
The main aim of T-UNI online is general improvement of communication and information exchange inside the university environment. The news about what’s going on at TUL is actualized 24 hours a day. Of course there is possibility to look into archive information. There exists no similar server of this magnitude in any of Czech universities.
Despite the server is financed by the university management, they offer independent reports and free room for all articles from different academic areas. They accept whole submissions in electronic version on their e-mail address tuni[at]tul.cz. T-UNI is the server open for every person interested in writing articles and reporting news. Especially they are willing to welcome new students in their structures.
All submissions are protected by author law. Distribution of articles isn’t limited but there is required the inclusion of T-UNI Online link in it.
T-UNI Online is willing to receive any reminders, themes and criticism. If you would like to meet them personally, they have their office on the S building’s second floor, room 322. Phone 48 535 4209, e-mail tuni[at]tul.cz
